PRO-PALESTINIAN ACTIVIST MAHMOUD KHALIL DELIVERING PUBLIC STATEMENTNEW YORK, US - JUNE 22: Pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil delivered a public statement on Sunday after a US judge ordered his release, following legal proceedings that drew attention from rights groups and supporters across the country. A US federal judge on Friday, ordered the release of pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, who had been held in government custody since March. The ruling stated that Khalil cannot be deported and must be released, a decision welcomed by his wife, legal team, and civil rights groups like the ACLU. Khalil, a former Columbia University graduate student, was detained by ICE despite not being charged with any crime. The Trump administration argued his political speech could harm US foreign policy. The judge ruled that Khalil posed no danger or flight risk and criticized the government's attempt to use immigration law to punish protected political expression, calling it "unconstitutional." Khalil missed the birth of his first child while in detention and stated his priority is now reuniting with his family. US lawmakers, including Pramila Jayapal and Rashida Tlaib, called the ruling a victory for free speech and immigrant rights.
