Protests erupted in support of a Columbia University graduate detained by ICE.
Mahmoud Khalil, a student activist and negotiator in pro-Palestine protests, was arrested and detained by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on March 8 at his home.
He was taken into custody after his lawyer stated that his green card had been revoked by the Trump administration.
Footage captured by Naguib Mahfouzball shows demonstrators holding placards and chanting: 'Freedom for Khalil now,' at Washington Square Park on March 11.
Khalil, a legal U.S. resident, was detained by federal agents as part of a broader crackdown under President Trump, which targeted pro-Palestinian activism on college campuses.
While his arrest has sparked outrage, his deportation has been blocked by judicial intervention, highlighting tensions between national security concerns and the protection of free speech rights.
Congressional leaders have voiced their support for Khalil, calling for the protection of constitutional rights amid growing concerns over security measures that disproportionately target activists.
Israel launched airstrikes on the Gaza Strip in retaliation for an attack by the governing party Hamas on a Jewish music festival on October 7 last year.
However, the situation— which Israel claims is self-defence—has drawn criticism from around the world.
Craig Mokhiber, a director at the United Nations, resigned over the organization's "failure" to act against what he described as a "textbook case of genocide" by Israel against Gaza.
