U.S. Senate Republicans advanced President Donald Trump's "big, beautiful bill" in a 51-to-49 procedural vote late Saturday night, pushing the massive tax and spending package one step closer to its passage. Following this procedural vote, the bill will go through reading, debate, amendment voting and final vote, which is expected to take several days, and be sent to the president for signature before July 4. The 940-page "big, beautiful bill" extends 3.8 trillion U.S. dollars in Trump-era tax cuts, adds new exemptions, and boosts funding for border enforcement. To offset the costs, it proposes cuts to Medic-aid, food stamps, and green energy programs. Critics, including the Democrats and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, warn it could deepen the U.S. deficit and hurt vulnerable communities. The sprawling tax and spending measure passed the House of Representatives by a single vote last month. SHOTLIST: FILE: Washington D.C., USA - Oct 2024 1.
