Storyline: China successfully produces Yttrium-90 in commercial reactors [Voice_over] The China National Nuclear Corporation recently announced that the country can now produce large amounts of Yttrium-90, an isotope used to treat liver cancer. Engineers explained that Yttrium-90 can be produced in the commercial heavy-water nuclear reactor at the Qinshan Nuclear Power Base which offers unique advantages. [Sound_bite] Li Shisheng, deputy chief engineer at, Qinshan Nuclear Power Base: "The commercial heavy-water reactor has a relatively high neutron flux, and it is able to operate stably. The activation zone of the core is very big. Using this type of reactor to produce Yttrium-90 has significant benefits, such as the ability to increase production, reduce costs, and provide a consistent supply." [Sound_bite] Yttrium-90 destroys cancerous tumors by releasing beta radiation directly into the liver’s blood vessels in a minimally invasive procedure that has become widely adopted worldwide.
