China's nuclear power generation capacity tops world (Voice_over) New information from the China Nuclear Energy Association shows the country’s total nuclear power generation capacity ranks first in the world for the first time in history at 113 million kilowatts. Data from the agency’s “blue book” development report released in late April shows that the country’s nuclear plants in operation, those under construction, and those planned for construction were included in the capacity figure. The report says last year nuclear power accounted for nearly five percent of the country’s total electricity generation, for an equivalent reduction in CO2 emissions of about 334 million tons per year. (Sound_bite) Cao Shudong, executive vice chairman, China Nuclear Energy Association: "(In 2024) the first reactor of the CAP1400 demonstration project, one of China's major special projects, was completed and put into operation. The high-temperature gas-cooled reactor demonstration project is operating steadily after entering commercial use. The research and development of key technologies for nuclear energy systems based on a closed nuclear fuel cycle with fast reactors is also progressing in an orderly way.” (Voice_over) The CNEA report also highlighted China’s 100 percent localization of key technologies and equipment for nuclear power.
