And I will be proud to continue to urge the need for us to take on Tier 6. And I don't just say that as a Tier 6 member myself. I say that because too often we ask ourselves questions that we know the answer to. Questions like, ‘Why can't we attract and retain teachers the way that we used to?’ We know the answer. We are forcing those same teachers to earn less and work longer. We are telling those teachers that the bargain they made so long ago to work in public service, to at least have the benefit of that public pension, is now being taken away from them. And I will go to Albany with that as a key part of my agenda, continuing to build on the work that has been done over these last few years, but not stopping until we finally deliver a contract and an agreement that will bring more people to work in this school system.”NEW YORK, US - JULY 9, 2025: Democratic New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani addressed members of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) on Wednesday, July 9, at an event held at the UFT headquarters in Manhattan. Mamdani was joined by UFT President Michael Mulgrew and union members during the gathering, where he spoke about education challenges in the city and commented on the policies of current Mayor Eric Adams and President Donald Trump. In his remarks, Mamdani criticized teachers' retirement system Tier 6 and emphasized the need to reform it in order to attract and retain teachers. “We are forcing those same teachers to earn less and work longer,” he said, pledging to make pension reform a key part of his agenda if elected. UFT President Michael Mulgrew also addressed the crowd, saying New York City schools are at a crisis point. “We cannot hire or keep people in positions across the school system. The city is at a crossroads,” he stated, calling for immediate action to address staffing shortages. Mamdani defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in last week's Democratic primary after rank-choice votes were counted.
