Little girl attempts to trip up robot, ends up getting her foot trod on
On May 4 in Guangzhou, Guangdong, a young girl deliberately used her foot to block the path of a Unitree humanoid robot while watching it. Instead of activating its obstacle avoidance function, the robot stepped on her foot and knocked off her shoe. Fortunately, the girl was not injured, and the robot did not fall in the crowd.
On June 26, Wang Xingxing, CEO of Unitree Robotics, referred to the incident at the Summer Davos Forum in Tianjin. He pointed out that obstacle avoidance technology remains a challenge, especially in densely populated and complex environments.
Most robots are only equipped with forward-facing obstacle avoidance and struggle to handle omnidirectional obstacles, such as pedestrians suddenly approaching from the side. When encountering obstacles, robots must intelligently choose between bypassing or stopping, but current algorithms are still immature. If a robot moves too quickly, it may collide with people; if too slowly, it loses practical value.
Wang noted that robotics technology is still in its early stages, comparable to the safety issues during the early days of the steam engine, and requires continuous iteration and optimisation.
