According to a report by the Institute of the Greek Tourism Confederation (INSETE), tourism generated €30.2 billion in direct revenue in 2024, accounting for 13% of the country’s GDP. When indirect impacts are included, the sector’s total contribution exceeded 30%. Tourism also represented 16.5% of total employment in the third quarter of 2024, with international arrivals reaching 35.9 million—an increase of 3.2 million from the previous year. However, Greek media have reported growing concerns over soaring rents in popular tourist areas and water shortages during peak summer months. The government is seeking long-term strategies to balance the sector’s economic impact with its social and environmental costs.
