Palestinians collect expired flour from landfill amid israeli blockade in Gaza
...KHAN YOUNIS, GAZA, PALESTINE - JULY 18, 2025: The humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip continued to worsen Saturday, July 19, as famine spreads rapidly across the enclave amid a crippling Israeli blockade and ongoing military operations. In the Khan Younis area, Palestinians were seen collecting flour from a landfill in northern Al-Mawasi, where the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) had discarded expired supplies. Desperate to secure basic food, residents resorted to salvaging what they could. Images from the scene highlighted the deepening disaster, with tens of thousands of families reportedly facing similar conditions as access to food becomes increasingly scarce. The price of essential items has soared, with a kilogram of flour reportedly selling for around $60 and rice for over $30, according to local reports. Aid deliveries remain severely restricted, prompting urgent calls from international humanitarian groups for immediate access to the besieged territory. The Gaza Health Ministry earlier Saturday warned of a worsening famine, citing an increase in hunger-related deaths and the collapse of the medical system. The Israeli army has killed nearly 59,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip since October 2023, most of them women and children. The relentless bombardment has destroyed the enclave, making it uninhabitable. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees said people in Gaza are living under "bombardment, displacement, and siege." They are facing relentless summer heat with little to no shelter, clean water, or electricity. Israel imposed a full humanitarian blockade of Gaza on March 2, cutting off food, medical supplies and other aid to the more than 2 million Palestinians in the territory. Since late May, the UN agencies have been bypassed and the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation is operating aid distribution sites, leading to hundreds of deaths since then.
