Cuba: Hurricane Melissa causes severe damages in Cuba
Hurricane Melissa has wreaked havoc in many parts of Cuba, causing heavy rainfall and landslides. Government agencies in the country are actively engaged in rescue and disaster relief operations. Hurricane Melissa made landfall in southeast Cuba's Santiago de Cuba Province in the early hours of Wednesday. Despite being downgraded to a Category-3 hurricane, wind speeds remained near 195 kilometers per hour. The storm moved northeast, unleashing strong winds and torrential rains across several provinces, with coastal waves reaching up to 6 meters. Widespread flooding and landslides hit the provinces of Holguin and Granma, while the water level in the Parada reservoir in Santiago de Cuba, the second-largest city in Cuba and the capital of Santiago de Cuba Province, exceeded 90 percent of its total capacity. Many big trees were uprooted, and numerous buildings suffered varying degrees of damage. The Cuban government had previously evacuated 735,000 people in anticipation of the hurricane. At 17:30 on Wednesday, President Miguel Diaz-Canel received disaster reports from various provinces at the Palace of the Revolution in Havana, urging citizens to unite and collaborate in recovery efforts. Civil defense and military personnel have fully engaged in repair operations, and support teams for power and telecommunications from other provinces are heading to the affected areas. "This team consists of 55 colleagues from different positions in the electrical sector, including engineers, managers, and logistics staff. Based on the information available to us, the situation in Bayamo, Granma Province, is devastating. We expect to arrive there by midnight. This is a time for solidarity, and we are committed to support and help each other," said an electric power worker. The hurricane has now left Cuba and is moving through the Bahamas, but the impact still persists. The Cuban government has warned the eastern coastal provinces to remain cautious of ongoing rainfall and high waves. SHOTLIST: Cuba - Oct 29, 2025 1.
