A Thai soldier showed off a Buddhist amulet that saved him from being struck by shrapnel during a border clash with Cambodia.

Phadungkiat Chaweewong, 29, was stationed at the Thai-Cambodian border when grenade blasts rocked the Thai army camp nestled in a forest in Surin on Tuesday.

Shrapnel went flying everywhere, but the troop was spared a serious injury after the debris was lodged in the metal case of the religious talisman instead.

Photos shared by the officer showed a piece of metal still lodged in the red case, now pocked with holes and dents from the impact.

Sam Kalasin, a disciple of the monk Luang Pu Sila who consecrated the holy accessory, said demand for Buddhist amulets soared following the incident, as superstitious locals sought their protective powers.

He said: 'After the photos were widely shared, the market price significantly rose from hundreds or low thousands to high thousands for bronze, mid-thousands for alpaca metal, and to tens of thousands for silver.

'Interested buyers should be cautious and only purchase from reputable sellers or trusted shops to avoid being scammed.'

Lieutenant General Boonsin Padklang, commander of the Second Army Area, distributed some 20,000 amulets to soldiers patrolling the border 'to boost their morale'.

The front side of the amulet features an image of the Hindu deity Hanuman, symbolising bravery and invulnerability, while the back side contains a mystic symbol drawn by Luang Pu Sila.

The talisman cloth also has an image of Hanuman standing atop two crossed AK-47 rifles with an explosion in the background - symbolising victory over Cambodia.

In June, a Thai businessman miraculously survived a close-range gunshot after the bullet struck his Buddhist amulet during a business lunch in Bangkok.

Pornchai Horasakul, 50, was shot in the chest on June 12 following a dispute over real estate profits with business partner Phisek Samphaongern, 28, who allegedly fired the shot. The bullet reportedly ricocheted off Pornchai's amulet, sparing his life. He sustained minor injuries to his chest but survived, crediting the talisman for saving him.

Clashes flared in long-disputed border areas as Thailand and Cambodia accused each other of instigating the violence on July 24.

The Thai army claimed the clash began when six armed Cambodian soldiers approached a Thai outpost after a drone was heard near a disputed Khmer temple. Thai troops said they shouted warnings and claimed the Cambodians opened fire first.

However, Cambodia's Defence Ministry accused Thailand of provoking the violence, saying its forces acted in self-defence.

Officials said at least 43 people have been killed and more than 300,000 displaced on both sides of the border.

Both sides have reached a truce at midnight on Monday, following talks facilitated by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

He said: 'This is a vital first step toward de-escalation and the restoration of peace and security.'

US President Donald Trump had earlier threatened to pause trade deals with both countries if clashes continued.

He said after the ceasefire was forged: 'By ending this War, we have saved thousands of lives ... I have now ended many Wars in just six months — I am proud to be the President of PEACE!'
