This is the impressive moment a clever dog opened his own cage and let himself out.

Pipo, the smart brown Aspin, was caught in the act freeing himself from his enclosure in Manila, the Philippines.

Footage captured by Jerez Umipig shows the nine-year-old canine biting onto the latch handle and carefully sliding it open on July 4.

The dog can be seen leaning against the door, standing on his hind legs with his front paws on the metal bar.

Moments later, after successfully removing the lock, he stepped out and stood proudly in front of his amazed owner.

Jerez can be heard saying in the video: 'That's amazing. So that's how you open your cage.'

He recalled sipping coffee and smoking while preparing his car for a maintenance check.

Jerez added: 'I decided to put him in his cage because he might run out of the garage once the gate opened. As a responsible pet owner, I don't want my dog to harm anyone while he's outside.

'I always wondered if he could open his cage, so I filmed him from the garage—and to my surprise, he did. It was such a cute moment. I just realised how smart he is.'
