Coffs Harbour, Australia - July 31, 2025 A striking video filmed by Sbn Stendo shows a man capturing a nurse shark at Jetty Beach in Coffs Harbour. The footage captures the fierce struggle as the nurse shark fights hard against capture. Ultimately, the fisherman traps the shark with his legs to remove the fishing hook deeply lodged in its mouth. Nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum) belong to the family Ginglymostomatidae and have a global conservation status of Vulnerable according to the IUCN List of Threatened Species. While considered of least concern in the United States and The Bahamas, nurse sharks are near threatened in the western Atlantic Ocean due to vulnerabilities in South America and threats across Central America and the Caribbean. These sharks are directly targeted by some fisheries and are often caught as by-catch in others. Nurse sharks are important to scientific research because they tolerate capture, handling, and tagging very well. Despite their calm and sedentary nature, nurse sharks rank fourth in documented shark bites on humans, likely due to divers underestimating their potential danger.
