VARIOUS OF PROTESTERS PRISTINA, KOSOVO - AUGUST 7: Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Kosovo's capital on Thursday, Aug. 7, in a massive show of opposition to the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague. The protest, organized by veterans of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), targeted the court's prosecution of former KLA leaders including ex-President Hashim Thaci. Protesters waving the black-and-red KLA flags packed Skanderbeg Square, chanting slogans against what they call an unjust international tribunal. The demonstration paralyzed central Pristina for hours, with major traffic disruptions throughout the city center. Hysni Gucati, leader of the KLA War Veterans Organization, addressed the crowd, accusing the court of rewriting history. "This so-called justice is nothing but political theater," Gucati declared to roaring applause. "They want to criminalize our fight for freedom." The protest comes amid growing anger over the court's recent decision to admit evidence from Serbian security services in ongoing war crimes cases. Kosovo's acting Justice Minister Albulena Haxhiu has condemned the move, calling Serbian security documents "wrong and unacceptable.” The Specialist Chambers, operating under Kosovo law but with international judges, has faced persistent criticism since its 2015 creation. While it has convicted several KLA figures, including a former commander sentenced to 18 years last summer, many Kosovars see it as unfairly targeting their independence heroes. The special court, known as the Kosovo Special Chambers, and the Special Prosecutor's Office were established in The Hague in 2011. It was established to investigate and prosecute war crimes alleged to have been committed in Kosovo between 1998 - 2000. It consists of international judges and prosecutors. Since the beginning of 2019, the Special Prosecutor's Office has invited dozens of former KLA members to testify. The first indictment that was approved on Oct. 26, 2020, against former Kosovo President Hashim Thaci, who is charged with war crimes, along with three other defendants, said they were responsible for the deaths of 100 victims. The KLA was founded by Kosovo Albanians in the 1990s to oppose Yugoslav forces and lead Kosovo to an independent country. Kosovo declared its unilateral independence from Serbia on Feb. 17, 2008, but Serbia still sees Kosovo as its "own territory." Reporting by Agim Sulaj Writing by Sibel Uygun
