Authorities said a fast-moving fire in the Patras region has spread rapidly across a wide area. Kostas Tsingas, head of the Fire Brigade Officers’ Association, told a public broadcaster that 82 new fires were reported nationwide on Tuesday alone. Strong winds, drought and extreme heat have hindered containment efforts. The most dangerous fronts, Tsingas noted, were near Patras and Preveza, both advancing toward residential areas. Southern Europe continues to endure extreme heat waves and wildfires, and in Greece, several regions remain under threat. Flames in western and Aegean areas have forced evacuations, damaged homes and farms, and triggered sea rescues, according to local media outlet Ekathimerini. In Achaia, fast-moving fires reached residential neighborhoods and closed roads near Patras. On the island of Chios, dozens of people stranded on beaches were rescued by the coast guard, the report said. Firefighting forces across the country remain on full alert as officials warn that extreme heat and strong winds are fueling the blazes. Late Tuesday, Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis said evacuations of the Kato Achaia and Thesprotiko health centers have been completed as wildfires rage in Achaia, Preveza and Chios. Emergency services have deployed multiple ambulances, transferring several patients with respiratory issues and minor burns to hospitals and shelters. In Achaia, seven people were taken to the University General Hospital of Patras, while others were moved to nearby health centers. In Preveza, residents and patients from evacuated facilities were relocated to the General Hospital of Arta. On Chios, six people with respiratory problems were hospitalized.
