US: Endangered Pygmy Slow Loris Baby Born In Bronx Zoo’s World Of Darkness Exhibit
New York, United States - January 21, 2026 The Bronx Zoo has announced the birth of an endangered pygmy slow loris, born on December 13, 2025, marking the first primate born in the zoo’s new World of Darkness exhibit. The pygmy slow loris is a small primate native to Southeast Asia. Listed as Endangered by the IUCN Red List, their numbers are rapidly declining due to habitat loss and poaching for the illegal pet trade. The Bronx Zoo participates in the Species Survival Plan, a breeding program designed to maintain a genetically diverse population. Slow lorises are born fully furred with eyes open and grow to about one pound. Infants cling to their mother’s stomach and are sometimes "parked" on branches while she forages. The baby will gradually become more independent and is expected to be fully weaned by six months. Staff will determine its sex at the first veterinary exam. The World of Darkness exhibit originally opened in 1969 and was the first major zoo exhibit to use a reverse day-night cycle, allowing visitors to see nocturnal animals active. Reopened in 2025 with updated features, the exhibit uses programmable LED lighting to simulate natural transitions, showcasing 25 species adapted to darkness. In observance of winter hours, the zoo is open daily from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM through April 1. Exhibits close 30 minutes before the park closes. Visitors are asked to avoid flash photography to protect the sensitive pygmy slow loris.
