The “Knowledge Icebreaker” voyage, first held in international format last year, is hosting students and experts from Türkiye, Russia, China, South Africa, Kazakhstan, Bangladesh and other countries. The journey, lasting about 10 days, will include exploration of the Arctic aboard Russia’s only nuclear icebreaker used for tourism, the 50 Let Pobedy (50 Years of Victory).

Departing from Murmansk, the vessel is scheduled to reach the Franz Josef Land archipelago, arrive at the North Pole on August 17, and return to Murmansk on August 22. The trip will feature a scientific education program for international specialists in nuclear and space technologies, and participants will have the opportunity to learn about the nuclear icebreaker’s operations.

Captain Ruslan Sasov told Anadolu that preparations for the voyage were thorough and all safety measures had been taken. “Students will have their own program during the expedition. My crew’s task is to take them to the North Pole, complete the planned activities and bring everyone safely back to Murmansk,” he said, noting the route will pass through the Barents Sea to Franz Josef Land and the Arctic Ocean.

The “Knowledge Icebreaker” project promotes natural sciences and nuclear technologies, and supports talented youth. Organized by Rosatom with the Russian Znanie Society as a partner, it offers lectures, masterclasses, science-themed games, film screenings and other activities. This year’s expedition also coincides with the 500th anniversary of Russia’s development of the Northern Sea Route, which began in 1525.
