VARIOUS OF MOURNERS BEATING THEMSELVES, RECITING ELEGIESKARBALA, IRAQ - AUGUST 14: On Thursday, August 14, Shiite Muslims from Iraq and abroad gathered in the city of Karbala to commemorate Arbaeen, the 40th day of mourning for Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, and his 72 companions killed in the Battle of Karbala. Pilgrims joined processions between the shrines of Imam Hussein and his brother Abbas, marching and reciting elegies to honor the martyrs. The annual event is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, drawing millions of visitors to Karbala each year.
