VARIOUS TOP SHOTS OF PEOPLE SWIMMING IN SEINE PARIS, FRANCE - AUGUST 14: Parisians and tourists enjoyed a dip in the River Seine on Thursday, Aug. 14, after the city reopened three supervised swimming zones after two-week closure. The Grenelle location, offering a stunning view of the Eiffel Tower, has been particularly popular. On July 5, the iconic river reopened to swimmers for the first time in over a century, marking a major milestone in efforts to clean the iconic waterway. With a heatwave hitting the French capital this week, temperatures are expected to reach 38°C (100°F), prompting authorities to issue a "high vigilance" alert. The Seine’s water temperature on Monday was recorded at 22°C (71°F), making it a refreshing escape for locals and visitors alike. The designated bathing sites—located at Bercy, Grenelle, and Pont Marie—were inaugurated in July 2025 as part of a legacy project following the 2024 Paris Olympics. The move comes after a €1.4 billion ($1.6 billion) cleanup campaign to improve water quality, allowing swimming to return after being banned since 1923 due to pollution and safety concerns. Despite the investment, swimming is not always permitted. Heavy rainfall can lead to increased pollution, forcing closures for public health reasons. In July, the sites were open only 18 out of 31 days due to unfavorable weather conditions. Deputy Mayor Pierre Rabadan reported that more than 40,000 people have swum in the Seine since the sites opened on July 5. The swimming areas are free and open to those aged 10 and above (or 14 and above, depending on the site) until the end of August. Writing by Sibel Uygun
