OFFICIALS LEAVING FOR BURIALACCRA, GHANA - AUG. 15, 2025: Ghana's Defense Minister Edward Omane Boamah, who died in a military helicopter crash on August 6, was laid to rest on Friday, Aug. 15. The ceremony took place at Black Star Square in the capital, Accra, honoring Boamah and five other Christians who lost their lives in the Ashanti region crash. President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, former President Nana Akufo-Addo, the Grand Mufti of Ghana Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, ministers, senior officials, and a large number of attendees participated in the service. Speaking at the funeral, President Mahama said he prayed for the ceremony to bring peace to a grieving nation and for the dawn of a new era that Ghanaians can take pride in. Following the ceremony, Boamah’s body was buried in a military cemetery at Burma Camp, escorted by a military convoy. The helicopter had taken off from Accra bound for Obuasi in Ashanti on Aug. 6 but crashed in the Adansi Brofoyedu area, killing eight people, including Defence Minister Boamah and Minister of Environment, Science and Technology Murtala Muhammed. An Islamic funeral was held on Aug. 10 in Accra for Minister Muhammed and Deputy Director-General of National Security Muniru Lumina.
