INJURED PALESTINIAN TODDLER LYING IN HOSPITAL BED (TWO SHOTS) GAZA, PALESTINE- AUGUST 17, 2025: Palestinian Jumana Najjar, a two-and-a-half-year-old girl from Khan Younis in southern Gaza, is fighting for her life after being critically wounded when Israeli shelling struck near her family’s tent. Shrapnel from the attack pierced multiple internal organs, including her liver, kidneys, stomach, intestines, gallbladder, and digestive system. The incident occurred on August 10 while Jumana was playing near her home. She was initially taken to a Red Cross field hospital in the Al-Mawasi area near Rafah, where emergency microsurgery was performed. Due to limited medical resources, she was later transferred to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis for further treatment. Jumana’s mother, Shayma Abu Ride, described her daughter’s deteriorating condition after being admitted to the pediatric surgery ward: Jumana developed jaundice, widespread swelling, and a persistent fever. She was initially placed in intensive care, and then moved to a general ward once her swelling began to subside. "The doctors need to perform an endoscopy to examine her intestines, but Gaza has no endoscopy equipment," said Abu Ride. "f her condition worsens within 48 hours, she will require another surgery. Because her health is not stable, a second operation here is extremely risky. That’s why we urgently need to take her outside Gaza for treatment." Medical staff and her family are appealing for immediate humanitarian assistance to transfer Jumana to a facility outside Gaza where she can receive the specialized care she desperately needs. The health sector has been one of the hardest-hit pillars of Gaza’s ongoing humanitarian crisis. Since October 7, 2023, Israeli genocidal attacks have repeatedly targeted hospitals and medical facilities, while a strict blockade has prevented the entry of essential medicines and medical equipment. According to Gaza’s authorities, as of July 18, 38 hospitals and 96 health centers have been bombed, destroyed, or rendered inoperable by Israel. In addition, 144 ambulances and 55 civil defense vehicles have been targeted. An estimated 22,000 patients require treatment outside Gaza but are unable to leave due to the inhumane blockade, while 350,000 people with chronic illnesses struggle to survive without access to essential medications. The destruction of healthcare infrastructure and the denial of medical access have compounded the suffering of civilians amid the ongoing Israeli genocide and blockade.
