STORYLINE:

Reem Mohammed Abu Taha is one of many Palestinians from Gaza, who have been transferred to Baghdad for treatment by the Iraqi government.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): REEM MOHAMMED ABU TAHA, Palestinian from Gaza
"I am the mother of the three injured, Abdul Aziz, Linan, and Yamen. We are from Gaza, in the city of Khan Younis."

Abu Taha's life was shattered on the morning of Dec. 7, 2023. Without warning, Israeli airstrikes targeted the five-story building where her family lived.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): REEM MOHAMMED ABU TAHA, Palestinian from Gaza
"They (Israelis) targeted the building on the fifth, fourth, and third floors, everything in these apartments fell to the ground. Among them were my children, my eldest son Muhammad who is 19 years old. He was martyred immediately as the stairs fell on him. And these three children fell on the street with rubble above them. My heart was broken for the orphans left by my family members and relatives, and God willing, I will be their mother."

The Israeli missiles turned her home into rubble, claiming 24 lives in her household.

Since the new round of conflict between Israel and Hamas erupted on Oct. 7, 2023, Israeli military actions have claimed over 40,000 Palestinian lives and injured more than 92,000.

SOUNDBITE 3 (Arabic): KHALED AHMED BARAKET, Wounded Palestinian from Gaza
"Due to Israeli shelling, I was wounded in my hand, which required seven stitches in my hand and head. Our neighbor's house was bombed, causing all four floors to collapse. Around 30 people were martyred, and there are still victims, including children, women, and the elderly, trapped under the rubble. I was injured by shrapnel due to the bombing."

SOUNDBITE 4 (Arabic): ASMAHAN JUMAA, Wounded Palestinian from Gaza
"I had surgery (in Gaza) where they poked needles into my face without any anesthesia. Most of my operations were done without anesthesia because they didn't have any, and there were also shortages of bandages. I have six children. When I left Gaza, I had a 5-month-old baby girl. Now, she's a year and three months old and has grown up without knowing me because we've been apart for so long. America was the main reason for the destruction of Gaza. It supported Israel with military equipment and gave it everything under the table."

Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Baghdad.
