China: Death toll rises to 10 in Inner Mongolia flash flood
The death toll from a flash flood that swept through a wild camping site in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has risen to 10, with two people still missing, local emergency authorities said Sunday. The disaster struck around 22:00 on Saturday in the upper reaches of a river in Urad Rear Banner, Bayannur City, leaving 13 campers unaccounted for. By 17:20 on Sunday, one person had been rescued, 10 were confirmed dead, and two remained missing, according to the city's emergency management bureau. More than 700 rescuers have been promptly dispatched to the site to search for the missing. From Saturday night through Sunday morning, Urad Middle Banner, lying east to Urad Rear Banner, was also hit by heavy rain, prompting the local water conservancy bureau and meteorological service to issue a joint yellow warning for flash floods. Rising waters trapped residents and travelers, triggering swift rescue efforts by local emergency services. Nine passengers stranded in three vehicles in fast-flowing, knee-deep water on an expressway in Wengeng Town were rescued on Saturday night. On Sunday morning, firefighters rushed to a local sheep farm, rescuing residents trapped in low-lying areas where floodwaters reached depths of 1.2 meters. Bayannur City is expected to see convective precipitation in the coming days, potentially accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, according to the local meteorological service. The Ministry of Emergency Management has warned travelers during the flood season to avoid undeveloped wilderness areas and to exercise caution in geologically hazardous zones.
