Bolivia: Bolivia's presidential vote heads for first-ever runoff
Bolivia's Supreme Electoral Tribunal announced on Sunday that the country's presidential election will proceed to a runoff, as preliminary results confirmed that no candidate secured the required majority in the first round. The preliminary results, published on the court's official website, showed that Rodrigo Paz Pereira, the candidate of the Christian Democratic Party, and Jorge Quiroga, the former president and candidate of the Alianza Libre coalition, ranked first and second among the eight candidates, with 32.1 percent and 26.8 percent of the votes, respectively. To win the election, a presidential candidate must receive over 50 percent of the votes or more than 40 percent of the votes while maintaining a vote share that is at least 10 percentage points higher than that of the second-place candidate. Otherwise, the top two candidates with the most votes will proceed to the second round. Bolivia commenced its presidential election on Sunday. Nearly 7.94 million voters nationwide cast their ballots to elect a new president and parliament, along with a vice president, 36 senators, 130 members of the lower house, and nine representatives to transnational parliamentary bodies. The second round is expected to take place on Oct 19. SHOTLIST: El Alto, Bolivia - Aug 17, 2025 1. Various of people registering information, casting ballots at poll station; 2.
