Last Friday, Lai’s request to be excused from attending the hearings on health grounds was rejected by the judges. Lai is now required to appear in court while taking prescribed medication and wearing a 24-hour heart monitoring device throughout the proceedings. The closing arguments, expected to last eight days, follow months of testimony in a high-profile case that has drawn significant local and international attention over press freedom and the scope of the national security law. Police teams took extensive security measures around the courthouse.
