Drone footage showed vehicles moving in convoy through the capital, draped in yellow fabric to symbolize toxic gas. At Ummayad Square, participants held banners describing the atrocity as the “massacre of the century” and carried photographs of the victims. The commemoration marked twelve years since the sarin gas attack on Eastern Ghouta on August 21, 2013, which killed more than 1,400 civilians and remains one of the deadliest chemical assaults in modern history. Residents of Eastern Ghouta endured a five-year siege before being forcibly displaced to northern Syria, with many only beginning to return after the Baath regime collapsed in December 2024. Under Syria’s transitional government led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa, the region has reopened to humanitarian missions and war crimes investigations. Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia on Dec. 8, ending the Baath Party regime, which had ruled the country since 1963.
