China: Smart pet gadgets steal show in Shanghai
Smart pet gadgets are taking center stage at the 27th Pet Fair Asia in Shanghai, showcasing fast-growing pet industry that blends lifestyle, fashion and high-tech innovation. Scheduled from Wednesday to Sunday, the event has attracted over half a million visitors to see some of the most eye-catching gadgets designed for their furry friends. In the tech zone, exhibitors are showing off phones, pianos and even high-tech toys specially designed for pets. A robot serving as a remote pet keeper enables owners to interact with their pets through an app. "We have integrated visual monitoring models designed for the health of pet cats and dogs into this device. It can assess their physical condition and even emotional state based on behavioral cues. For example, in cats, behaviors like prolonged activity or inappropriate urination can indicate underlying stress or mood issues. If signs of depression are detected, the system will notify the owner directly through the app," said Chi Yiyuan, vice president of Shenzhen TopWitAi Technology Co., Ltd. Some smart products including camera, water fountain and feeder are expected to become a standard feature of modern pet ownership. In 2024, the number of dogs and cats in China's urban areas reached 120 million, marking a modest 2.1 percent increase from 2023. According to KPMG's 2025 market report on the pet industry, smart pet products are growing at a remarkable pace, with the market size expanding from 3.15 billion yuan (about 439.6 million U.S. dollars) in 2018 to 6.99 billion yuan in 2024.
