Rescue and recovery efforts are underway across south China's Hainan Province after Typhoon Kajiki, the 13th typhoon of the year, slammed the region and wreaked havoc. Preliminary figures showed that about 102,500 people in Hainan were affected by the typhoon, and no casualties had been reported as of 9:00 Monday, according to a provincial press conference on Monday. The typhoon inflicted damage on roads, water supply systems, power and communication facilities in cities and counties including Sanya, Ledong, Lingshui and Wanning. It also toppled trees and triggered flooding in some areas. Now rescue and recovery efforts are underway. "The provincial party committee and the provincial government have dispatched more than 10,000 personnel from the military, armed police and firefighting teams, mobilized over 1,000 sanitation workers from the five cities and counties of Haikou, Wenchang, Qionghai, Danzhou and Wanning, and allocated more than 770,000 pieces of emergency supplies to support flood control, disaster relief and road clearance in severely-affected areas including Sanya, Lingshui and Ledong. Resources and personnel will be adjusted in real time to accelerate post-disaster recovery," Wu Zhanchao, deputy director of the Department of Emergency Management of Hainan Province, told the press conference on Kajiki response. Typhoon Kajiki whipped southern Hainan with strong winds and heavy rains on Sunday, marking the heaviest damage on record to Sanya by a typhoon and unleashing record-breaking rainfall across the southern part of the island. "Strong winds and heavy rains will keep lashing most of Hainan's waters and land throughout the day. Precautions must remain in place," said Cai Qinbo, spokesman for the Hainan Meteorological Bureau, at the press conference. SHOTLIST: Hainan Province, south China - Aug 24-26, 2025 1.
