Storyline: China's first pet gym opens in Shanghai [Voice_over] A new specialized gym has opened in Shanghai. But it's not for humans. It's for dogs! The facility, believed to be the first of its kind in China, spans 300 square meters and includes a retail space, fitness area, rehabilitation zone, and massage rooms. The owner of this chubby husky says the gym is just what his furry friend needs. [Sound_bite] Yao, Pet owner: "My husky is six years old and quite overweight, so we mainly want to help it lose weight. This appears to be China's first gym specifically for dogs, and I think it's pretty good." [Voice_over] From weight control to rehab training, the gym caters to dogs of all ages and sizes. Pet rehabilitation therapists assess each dog's physical condition before recommending the appropriate equipment and exercises. [Sound_bite] Lu Yilin, pet rehabilitation therapist: "If a dog has significant joint or bone issues, land-based treadmill exercises may not be suitable. Instead, hydrotherapy - such as underwater treadmills or swimming - would be better, as it places less stress on the body." [Voice_over] According to the Asia Pet Research Institute, China was home to 187 million pet dogs and cats in 2024 -- while the value of its pet market exceeded 40 billion U.S. dollars.
