BEIJING, CHINA - SEPTEMBER 2: Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday pledged to deepen bilateral “comprehensive strategic partnership” during talks in Beijing, underscoring what they described as an unprecedented level of political trust and cooperation, according to the Kremlin.
During a meeting in the Great Hall of the People, Xi hailed Putin as a “long-time friend,” saying relations between China and Russia had “stood the test of international circumstances” and now served as a model of interstate relations.
He said the two countries were determined to uphold the outcome of World War II and work together for a “more just and rational global governance system.”
Putin, for his part, said the Russian-Chinese relations were at an “unprecedentedly high level,” noting the memory of wartime brotherhood and mutual assistance formed the foundation of today’s partnership.
“We were together then, we remain together now,” he said, thanking Xi for the invitation and expressing confidence in the outcome of the consultations.
The Kremlin said the agenda of the negotiations included strengthening the comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction, boosting practical cooperation, and enhancing coordination on multilateral platforms, alongside regional and global issues.
The two leaders were also expected to discuss the Ukraine war and last month’s summit between Putin and US President Donald Trump in Anchorage, Alaska.
Putin arrived in Beijing after attending the 25th summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in the Chinese city of Tianjin.
He and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will be among state leaders from 26 countries attending a military parade in Beijing on Wednesday.
Earlier Tuesday, Xi, Putin, and Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh also held a trilateral meeting in the Chinese capital.
