Germany: Chinese enterprises take spotlight at Munich Car Show
Storyline: An increased presence of Chinese carmakers is standing out on the showroom floor at IAA Mobility, one of the world's five major automotive events and the largest in Europe, which opened its doors to the public in Munich on Monday. The biennial event, also known as the Munich International Motor Show, has attracted 748 exhibitors and will be open to the public through Sunday. This year, 116 Chinese enterprises are participating, up significantly from 70 in 2023 and marking a new record. Their exhibits span the full automotive supply chain, including new energy vehicles (NEVs), e-powertrain systems, and intelligent software and hardware solutions. "The presence of Chinese companies is a clear demonstration of both brand strength and product competitiveness. Chinese enterprises are gaining greater influence and leadership in the ongoing restructuring of the global auto industry," said Liu Yan, deputy secretary general of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). In addition to vehicles, Chinese battery giants are also in the spotlight. From lithium-ion and sodium-ion to solid-state and large cylindrical cells, these firms are demonstrating the latest breakthroughs in battery technology that are expected to power cars around the world. "Europe is rapidly accelerating its shift to electrification. With their cost advantages, lithium iron phosphate batteries have become a key technology driving electric mobility across Europe," said Zhu Lingbo, CTO of the Overseas Business Unit at CATL. Crucially, Chinese firms are also deepening their European ties through local production and partnerships. Industry leaders like BYD, Chery, Leapmotor, and CATL have already launched factories or joint ventures in Europe, evidence of a strategic shift from exporting to embedding within the European ecosystem. "Localization, diversification, complementary strengths, and win-win cooperation are the guiding principles of Chinese firms entering EU markets. It has become a growing trend for players across the industrial supply chain to 'go global together,' forming greater synergy that can better support the development of China's automotive industry in the EU market," said Liu.
