Breath-taking footage has captured a pod of whales swimming off the coast of North Fremantle, Western Australia.

Jason, in his 40s, filmed the whales near Leighton Beach on August 31 and September 3 after spotting them unusually close to shore.

The drone footage shows Southern Right Whales, including two calves, in the shallow waters.

According to local media, Southern Right Whales often pause in coastal shallows with their young before resuming their migration to Antarctica.

As of September 4, the pod - made up entirely of females - had been seen moving north of Leighton Beach.

Jason, from Perth, said: "I was fascinated by the whales being there, as it's unusual to see them so close to the beach and for them to hang around for so many days. "

"I was surprised they were still there on Wednesday, after first being sighted on Saturday."
