UK: London mayor calls for bike rides against continuing Tube strike
Storyline: London Mayor Sadiq Khan encourages people to ride bikes or use public transport as members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union stage a series of strikes. The strikes are scheduled for September 7 to 12, resulting in an early shutdown of services on Sunday evening and a four-day closure of the entire London Underground network starting Monday. Faced with little to no subway service until Friday, commuters are finding alternative ways to get around the British capital. The mayor of London recommended that citizens switch to bikes or other public transportation during the strikes, as the government had few options. Shared bikes become in short supply on London streets. Cycling is much faster than taking the bus, as London's road system, established centuries ago during the Industrial Revolution, has narrow streets and buses can be very slow during peak hours. The Transport for London (TfL), the city's transport authority, urges citizens to monitor real-time travel information and choose alternative modes of transportation, such as buses and bikes. In addition to the Tube strike, the London's Docklands Light Railway (DLR) train line also suspends services on certain days. The walkout follows failed negotiations between the RMT and TfL over pay and a reduced working week. The British government and the mayor of London urged the trade union and the transport authorities to restart negotiations to resolve conflicts as soon as possible, to reduce the disruptions' impact on the people and the city's operations.
