Doha, Qatar - September 15, 2025 Storyline: The recent Israeli airstrike in Doha has sparked public condemnation, with many residents of the Qatari capital asserting that the United States has lost its international credibility due to its long-standing bias and indulgence of Israel. Israel launched the unprecedented airstrike on Tuesday, targeting a building where Hamas officials were meeting to discuss the latest ceasefire proposal put forward by the U.S. Five members of Hamas and a Qatari security officer were killed during the strike, while key members of the Hamas negotiating team survived. Qatar has been long regarded as one of the safest nations in the Middle East. The strike on a residential area of Doha has left local residents outraged at what they saw as Israel's blatant disregard for the sovereignty of other nations. "[The Israeli airstrike took place in a] civilian area surrounded by schools, embassies, and residential buildings. It's bold, unacceptable actually. It is almost malicious that this sector of Doha narrowly avoided a large catastrophe because in the suburb of that same building is a petrol pump," said Ashraf, a resident. The peninsular country has been a primary mediator in ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas and has played a crucial role in securing the release of hostages and a temporary truce in January. With the international community pushing for a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, Israel's attack on the territory of a diplomatic mediator has been viewed as an act that could gravely undermine the negotiation process. "They need to stop them. They need to tell them this is out of order. This is unacceptable. And there needs to be some consequences that Israel needs to face, not only for the attack on the state of Qatar, but also on the genocide that they're committing in Palestine. If you're attacking the mediator, then how is that country going to establish peace?" said Ammar Al-Samarraie, another resident. The role of the U.S., a major ally to both Israel and Qatar, has come under intense scrutiny from the Qatari public. Despite the location of the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base just outside Doha, the U.S. neither provided protection to Qatar, nor issued a timely warning. Many Qataris believed that U.S. long-standing favoritism toward Israel is a root cause of the region's persistent turmoil. For many in Qatar, the U.S. has now completely lost its credibility. "The problem is America, because Israel can [antagonize] Qatar or the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries because they have very good relations with the United States of America. It is, I think, all within U.S. and Israel. Without U.S.'s vote, Israel can't do anything in this area," said Haroon Rashid Qureshi, editor-in-chief of Rahbar Kisan International, a local newspaper.
