China: China's southern regions brace for expected landfall of super typhoon Ragasa
Super typhoon Ragasa is expected to make landfall in south China's Guangdong Province on Wednesday, forcing several southern and coastal provinces to step up emergency responses. Ragasa, the 18th named storm of the 2025 Pacific typhoon season, intensified into a super typhoon on Sunday. In Guangdong, continuous monitoring and rolling forecasts have guided timely measures such as school and work suspensions, halting industrial production and transport services, evacuating residents, and opening shelters. More than one million people had been relocated across the province as of Tuesday. The China Southern Power Grid has deployed over 40,000 emergency repair personnel on standby, with mobile power generators, drainage units, and other relief equipment prepared. The Ministry of Water Resources have directed local authorities to release 500 million cubic meters of water from reservoirs during rainfall breaks to prepare for flood control operations. Meanwhile, passenger ferry services along coastal routes in south China's Guangxi and east China's Fujian have been suspended, and all offshore construction work has been halted. Hong Kong and Macao hoisted the No. 8 tropical cyclone signal on Tuesday, with all schools closed through Wednesday. Hong Kong International Airport remains open but has cut down significantly on flight operations. Ferry services across the Qiongzhou Strait have been suspended from 18:00 Tuesday for an expected two to three days. The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters has raised its emergency response for Guangdong and Hainan to level III, the third highest level. In addition, the Office of the National Disaster Reduction Committee and the Ministry of Emergency Management, together with the National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration, have urgently dispatched 60,000 relief items to Guangdong.
