Teams are conducting large-scale sweeps in damaged areas, using subsurface search detectors and “hook and line” methods to safely remove explosive remnants. According to the Landmine Monitor, more than 13,000 people have been affected by unexploded ordnance in Syria since 2011. One of the hardest-hit areas is the village of Berlehin, in eastern Aleppo countryside, which was once under the control of Daesh. In El-Ebzimo village in western Aleppo, farmer Nidal Bekru lost his leg when a mine exploded near his field. He urged residents not to enter farmland or frontline areas without notifying clearance teams, warning that the situation remains highly dangerous. Local residents and demining experts stress that mines and explosive remnants planted by regime forces continue to pose a serious threat to civilians. Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia last December, ending the Baath Party regime, which had been in power since 1963. Sharaa’s new transitional administration was formed in January.
