A fire near Haneda Airport in Japan sent towering plumes of smoke rising from an old hangar, prompting a swift response from emergency crews.

Footage shows thick black smoke billowing into the sky as a man, believed to be an employee, bravely attempts to extinguish the flames from the roof on September 29.

Authorities reported that the blaze started at a demolition site within the airport, where workers were dismantling an old hangar.

More than 30 fire engines and emergency vehicles were deployed to the scene. Crews managed to bring the fire under control around two hours later.

Police and fire crews are investigating the cause of the fire and checking whether anyone was injured.

Airport officials said flight operations were not affected, with no delays or cancellations reported.

The hangar was located roughly 1.2 kilometres northwest of Haneda Airport's Terminal 3.
