Berlin, Germany - October 03, 2025 Germany celebrated the 35th anniversary of reunification on Friday, October 3, 2025, with events, gatherings, and protests in Berlin, its capital. At the Brandenburg Gate, the emblem of unity since the fall of the Berlin Wall, visitors gathered to take photos and wave flags, while crowds moved through Potsdamer Platz, where remnants of the Wall remain a reminder of the city's divided past. Tourists and Berliners filled central landmarks from the Reichstag parliament building to the Chancellery and Berlin's central train station, which served as a hub for travelers arriving for the holiday. But the Unity Day celebrations also drew dissent. At nearby Bebelplatz, thousands of demonstrators joined an anti-war rally. Protesters denounced military spending, opposed a proposed return of conscription, and criticized planned U.S. missile deployments in Germany. Speakers included members of the German Bundestag and the European Parliament, as well as activists from Ukraine, Russia, and the Palestinian community in Berlin. Germany's Unity Day commemorates October 3, 1990, when East and West Germany formally reunited after the fall of the Berlin Wall, marking the end of four decades of division. This year's anniversary came against the backdrop of ongoing debates over defense spending, weapons exports, and Germany's role in global conflicts.
