Responding to a call from numerous civil society organizations, participants assembled at Odenplan Square. Protesters denounced the Israeli military’s actions against the flotilla and criticized the Swedish government for not speaking out on behalf of Swedish activists detained by Israel. Demonstrators carried banners reading “Children are being killed in Gaza,” “Schools and hospitals are being bombed,” and “End the food shortage,” while chanting slogans such as “Freedom for Palestine.” The protesters marched all the way to the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs building. Aydın Amir Hashimi, a Swedish activist of Azerbaijani origin who participated in the protest, said they condemned the attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters. He stressed that the killing of children, women, and civilians in Gaza is unacceptable and emphasized the need to highlight that the genocide is still ongoing. Israeli naval forces attacked and seized vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla on Thursday and detained more than 470 activists from over 50 countries. The flotilla had been attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and challenge Israel’s blockade of the enclave. Israel has maintained the blockade on Gaza, home to nearly 2.4 million people, for almost 18 years. Since October 2023, Israeli bombardments have killed more than 66,000 Palestinians in the enclave, most of them women and children, and rendered it all but uninhabitable.
