INTERVIEW WITH BRITISH JOURNALIST KIERAN ANDRIEUISTANBUL, TÜRKİYE - OCTOBER 5: Kieran Andrieu, a journalist who participated in the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was detained by Israel, spoke about the mistreatment faced by those on the flotilla. Andrieu, one of the activists brought to Istanbul through Türkiye’s efforts, spoke at the hotel where he stayed to rest following his legal proceedings. Highlighting the long and challenging journey to Gaza, Andrieu said as they got to know each other and formed bonds, they realized that the hardships they experienced throughout this process were nothing compared to the suffering of the people of Gaza, and more broadly, the Palestinian people. Andrieu emphasized that being on the boat had its "ups and downs," and noted that their love for the people of Gaza, combined with their anger toward Israel, served as a driving force. Describing the Israeli authorities’ treatment as "terrible," Andrieu stated that Israeli forces knocked on their doors at midnight to wake them and they were made to stand for long periods and then allowed to lie down again, only for the process to be repeated ten minutes later. He pointed out that officials used what he described as "psychological warfare" methods, which mirrored the tactics applied to Palestinians, and that they were subjected to physical mistreatment. Andrieu reported that detainees’ essential medications were thrown away, the water they were forced to drink was contaminated, and such treatment violated international humanitarian law. He added that some women experienced physical and sexual violence, veiled women had their headscarves forcibly removed, and they were served meals infested with insects. At times fearing for his life, Andrieu described staying in conditions with walls stained with feces and no proper sleeping arrangements. Expressing gratitude to Türkiye after being released from international waters, Andrieu thanked Türkiye for the hospitality of its people. He emphasized that while they were humiliated in Israel, they were warmly received in Türkiye, and noted that undergoing medical examinations there was important for "legal testimony." Israeli naval forces intercepted and seized vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla late Wednesday, detaining more than 470 activists from over 50 countries. The convoy aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and challenge. Israel's blockade of the enclave, which faces severe famine conditions. Since October 2023, Israeli bombardments have killed more than 67,100 Palestinians in Gaza, mostly women and children. These attacks have made the enclave uninhabitable, while the ongoing blockade has further pushed the population toward famine.
