Snapchat Faces Backlash Over New Paid Storage Plans. Snapchat parent company Snap has compared its new paid storage plans to those offered by Apple and Google for smartphones, but users are not happy with the change. For those unwilling to pay, an alternative option is to download their Memories, which for some users span tens of gigabytes of data, directly to their device. The company told the BBC that only a small number of users would be affected by the shift. Acknowledging the challenge of transitioning from free to paid services, Snap suggested the new plans would be "worth the cost" for users. However, many online critics disagree. An online petition has dubbed the fee a “memory tax,” with some commenters calling it “dystopian” and “ridiculous”. Some users even threatened to stop using the app altogether in protest.
