Mahmood Defends Overhaul Of ‘Out Of Control’ Asylum System. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood tells MPs the UK’s asylum system is ‘out of control and unfair’ warning that without action ‘we will draw more people down a path that starts with anger and ends in hatred.’ Her reforms will make refugee status temporary, end guaranteed housing support, and introduce capped ‘safe and legal routes’ into the UK. The proposals spark immediate division. Labour’s Nadia Whittome brands them ‘dystopian’ and ‘shameful while Conservatives offer cautious backing. Tory leader Kemi Badenoch calls the plans ‘positive baby steps’ but argues they are ‘doomed to fail’ unless the UK leaves the European Convention on Human Rights. Liberal Democrat MP Max Wilkinson welcomes the new legal routes but accuses Mahmood of ‘stoking division’. Mahmood hit back the comments, saying she regularly faces racist abuse, including being told to ‘go back home’. She insists the reforms are essential to restore fairness and control.
