Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians begin returning to northern Gaza amid ceasefire (2)
GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - OCTOBER 10: Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have begun returning to the northern Gaza Strip following a partial withdrawal of Israeli troops and the start of a humanitarian ceasefire on Friday, Oct. 10. The ceasefire, which was reached in Egypt and came into effect at 12:00 p.m. local time (0900 GMT), has enabled the movement of displaced families back to their homes, many of which have been reduced to rubble. Following the Israeli army's announcement of a partial pullback from some occupied areas in Gaza, Palestinians who had been forced to flee south are now traveling back to Gaza City and other northern areas. The main routes for this return are the Rashid and Salah al-Din roads, which connect the central and southern regions of Gaza to the north. In a statement on the social media platform X, Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee outlined restrictions for Palestinians under the new ceasefire. "In accordance with the agreement, Israeli soldiers will continue to remain deployed in certain areas of the Gaza Strip," Adraee said, warning people not to approach Israeli forces until a further announcement is made. He emphasized that doing so would be dangerous. While confirming that passage from south to north was permitted via the Rashid and Salah al-Din roads, Adraee issued stern warnings about specific areas. "Approaching the areas of Beit Hanoun, Beit Lahia, and Shujaiyya in the north of the Gaza Strip, as well as the areas where soldiers are deployed, is extremely dangerous," he stated. He also highlighted dangers in the south, noting that "approaching the Rafah Border Gate and the Philadelphia Corridor area, as well as all military areas in Khan Yunis, is very dangerous." Further warnings were issued against fishing, entering the sea, and approaching Israeli territories and buffer zones. The Israeli army shared footage it said showed the partial withdrawal of its forces from some areas of Gaza. In a written statement, the army confirmed that the partial withdrawal of its soldiers to positions defined as the "yellow line" had been completed.
