The demonstration, organized by the store's inter-union group, took place in front of the BHV Marais, a landmark building that has stood opposite Paris City Hall since 1856. Protesters voiced concerns that Shein's presence poses a "short-term threat to the survival of the department store." The mobilization follows last week's announcement that Shein will open a dedicated, permanent corner on the store's sixth floor in November. Reportedly spanning over 1,000 square meters, this would mark Shein's first permanent retail space anywhere in the world, moving beyond its previous pop-up store model. Critics argue that Shein's ultra-competitive pricing and meteoric rise will further damage traditional French retailers, many of which have already faced staff layoffs and store closures. The move has reportedly prompted some French brands to announce their departure from BHV Marais, a department store that has previously struggled with losing tenants. Founded in China and now headquartered in Singapore, Shein has become a major global force in the fast-fashion industry, known for selling a wide array of products at very low prices.
