VARIOUS OF ALASKA AIRLINES CENTER BUILDINGALASKA, US - OCT. 16, 2025: A powerful typhoon named Halong struck western Alaska over the weekend, leaving one person dead and displacing more than 1,500 residents, local media reported Thursday, Oct. 16. Authorities said heavy rain and strong winds caused severe flooding in several coastal areas. Fifty-one people were rescued from rising waters, while one person was found dead after being swept away. Officials reported that some homes were torn from their foundations and carried away by floodwaters, and several villages were completely submerged. Emergency shelters were opened as displaced residents were evacuated to nearby towns and city centers. Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy said that the U.S. Coast Guard, National Guard, and local emergency units had been working continuously to reach affected residents. “The Coast Guard was active throughout this typhoon, rescuing people off their homes and out of villages,” Dunleavy said. He added that the federal government, including FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security, had been informed and was ready to assist. “Our first priority is making sure people have a roof over their heads, food, and a place to sleep,” Dunleavy said. “We’ll assess the damage on Friday to determine what’s needed to get the villages back on their feet. FEMA and Homeland Security are aware, and the President has been briefed.”
