UNCAPTIONED: Greta Thunberg Accuses Israeli Troops of Abuse After Detention at Sea
Greta Thunberg Accuses Israeli Troops of Abuse After Detention at Sea. Greta Thunberg has accused Israeli soldiers of assaulting and humiliating her after being detained at sea while trying to reach Gaza with a humanitarian flotilla. The Swedish activist was aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla when Israeli forces intercepted the vessels in international waters earlier this month. Thunberg said she and other passengers, including French MEP Rima Hassan, were arrested and taken into custody by Israeli authorities. “They hit and kicked me,” Thunberg told Aftonbladet, alleging soldiers threw an Israeli flag over her and stomped on her hat “to humiliate” her. She claimed her hands were cable-tied, her belongings were cut apart, and that soldiers lined up to take selfies with her while mocking her. Thunberg also said Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir appeared during the detention, shouting, “You are terrorists. You want to kill Jewish babies.” The Israeli Foreign Ministry dismissed her allegations as “brazen lies,” saying Thunberg never filed a formal complaint during or after her detention. Thunberg was released and deported after five days, saying her bag was returned defaced with insults and accusing Swedish officials of failing to act.
