US: SoCal Freeway Closes for Military Event with VP Vance
Oceanside, United States - October 18, 2025 San Diego County, CA–A major stretch of Interstate 5 Freeway near Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton was shut down for several hours Saturday due to a large-scale military event attended by Vice President JD Vance. According to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the closure extended from Harbor Drive to Basilone Road out of safety concerns related to live ammunition being discharged over the freeway during the event. The temporary shutdown led to significant traffic congestion in Oceanside and Carlsbad, with several onramps closed and motorists forced to seek alternate routes through local streets. Vice President Vance was at Camp Pendleton to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps.
