Suspected Cambodian drones flew over Thai villages, with US President Donald Trump set to join peace talks between the two nations.

The aerial machines were allegedly seen hovering around a mile from the Banthat mountain range in Trat province on October 16 evening.

Footage shows alleged drone lights blinking intermittently in the darkness, sparking espionage fears among the locals who claimed to have seen at least 10 drones in the area.

Somnuek Latluea, a former border patrol officer, said: 'The round-trip flights took approximately 40 minutes, with varying intervals, sometimes as little as five minutes, sometimes lasting 15 minutes. The drones would also fly in other directions.'

Captain Sunthorn Cha-aumram, chief of Marine Company 534, said Thai authorities were not operating any drones for surveillance and believed the drones belonged to Cambodia.

The alleged encroachment comes as US President Donald Trump was set to oversee the signing of a ceasefire deal between Thailand and Cambodia next week during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit.

Thailand and Cambodia have been fighting for more than a century over several undemarcated sections of their 817-kilometre (508-mile) border, which was originally mapped by France in 1907 while Cambodia was still its protectorate.

But tensions flared in the long-disputed frontier as both accused each other of instigating violence on July 24, which killed at least 48 and temporarily displaced some 300,000 on both sides of the border.

Cambodia claimed responsibility for the alleged war crime of firing rockets into Thailand that struck a gas station, killing a number of children.

The two nations have reached a shaky truce following talks facilitated by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

However, sabre-rattling has continued - with rabble-rousers from the both countries whipping each side into nationalistic frenzies.
