Thai soldiers demolish Cambodian homes 'encroaching on land'
Thai soldiers demolished Cambodian homes allegedly encroaching on Thai territory.
Thailand's Burapha Task Force deployed heavy machinery to clear a village in Sa Kaeo province, bordering Banteay Meanchey in Cambodia, on Tuesday.
Drone footage shows cranes and bulldozers flatting houses in the Ban Nong Chan area, where Cambodian citizens were ordered to evacuate weeks earlier.
Authorities said the clearing was meant to 'remove landmines and structures that posed dangers or obstructed officers', adding the land will later be returned to the 'true owners'.
In a report, the First Army Area said: 'On the Thai side, local residents and residents of Ban Nong Chan were observed. Approximately 10 to 15 people, including citizens, vendors, and other members of the public, participated in activities demonstrating patriotism and sovereignty. No significant individuals were detected in the area.
'On the Cambodian side, in Chok Chey Village, residents, media, soldiers, and police were observed gathering and dispersing around agricultural areas, monitoring the Thai side's movements and operations.
'Approximately 40 to 50 people were observed in Prey Chan Village, and a group of people traveled into the area to monitor Thai movements. Cambodian residents continued to live and conduct their daily lives as usual. There are no signs of any evacuation from the area.
'The general situation is normal.'
The Burapha Task Force also sent officers to reinforce the barbed wire fence to prevent Thai crowds from entering the operational zone. The military engineer unit secured 4,000 square metres of Ban Nong Chan using armored bulldozers and front-end loaders.
Thailand and Cambodia have been fighting for more than a century over several undemarcated sections of their 817-kilometre (508-mile) border, which was originally mapped by France in 1907 while Cambodia was still its protectorate.
But tensions flared in the long-disputed frontier as both accused each other of instigating violence on July 24, which killed at least 48 and temporarily displaced some 300,000 on both sides of the border.
Cambodia claimed responsibility for the alleged war crime of firing rockets into Thailand that struck a gas station, killing a number of children.
The two nations have reached a shaky truce following talks facilitated by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
However, sabre-rattling has continued - with rabble-rousers from the both countries whipping each side into nationalistic frenzies.
