Over 8,000 Flights Delayed Across U.S. Amid Air Traffic Staff Shortages. More than 8,000 flights were delayed across the United States on Sunday as the federal government shutdown entered its 26th day, deepening a crisis in the nation's air travel system. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said air traffic control shortages hit 22 locations on Saturday — one of the highest levels since the shutdown began on October 1. He warned that more disruptions are likely in the days ahead. According to FlightAware, Southwest Airlines had about 2,000 flights delayed, while American, United, and Delta also reported hundreds of delays. Roughly 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 TSA officers are currently working without pay, with many now taking second jobs as they miss their first full paycheck this week. The FAA says key airports — including Chicago O'Hare, Washington Reagan, and Newark — were forced to issue ground delays on Sunday. Officials warn that if the shutdown continues, travel disruptions could worsen nationwide. [Instructions: THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT]
